Prizes Best Film International Competition "Darwin's Nightmare", Hubert Sauper, Austria / Belgium / France, 2004 A terrifying lamentation on the state of humanity at the beginning of the 21st century. A film which succeeds in connecting the story of one small place, at the shores of lake Victoria, with an appalling international story in which we all take part in. Ecology, weapon trade, food industry, easy money, prostitution, diseases and death are all echoing in this global story who gives a problematic sense of cultural meeting. The filmmaker manages to hide his presence and the camera presence from the viewer, this clears the arena to the heroes of the film, who have stamped strong and hard images in our minds which will not be forgotten soon. 2,500$ - sponsored by Josianne Tsvia Meitar
Special Mention International Competition "3 Rooms of Melancholia", Pirjo Honkasalo, Finland, 2004 An inspirational film, whose makers ignored the standard limitations of broadcasting and distribution. Its style is innovative but yet well rotted into the tradition of the features and documentary masterpieces. Even though it deals with tragic situations it provides the viewers an actual feeling that one can and should take action even though the situation seemed lost. The film deals with children's fate in Chechnya and Ingushetia but we, the jury, found it more than relevant here at the international Documentary film festival in Tel – Aviv 2005.
