Jury Comments:
A great power of documentary is to take us into worlds we'd never have a chance to explore otherwise. This film takes us into both a closed society and a rarely seen emotional terrain. Special mention much be made for the cinematography that brings into such intimate proximity to these characters that we feel almost inside them.

Special Jury Mention

"My First War" by Yariv Mozer
Producers: Yariv Mozer and Yael Perlov, Cinematography: Yariv Mozer and Ronny Katsanelson, Editor: Yael Perlov

Sponsored by Sara and Prof. Michael Sela - 10,000 NIS

Jury Comments:
One function of documentary is to bear witness, to capture moments that can never be recreated. This filmmaker achieved that under harrowing conditions, bringing us a document of raw intensity.

The Tel-Aviv Yafo Mayor Award for Young and Upcoming Filmmaker

"Yidishe Mama" by Fima Schlik and Genadi Kuchuck

Sponsored by Tel-Aviv Yafo Municipality - 30,000 NIS

Jury Comments:
Often documentaries focus on public issues. But equally important for understanding our times is to train our eyes on the more private matters of family dynamics. This film speaks volumes about generational shifts and what we do for love. It does so with great humor and insight

Cinematography Award

Ran Aviad, "Adama"

Sponsored by Dan David Foundation - 15,000 NIS

Jury Comments:
In this film, landscape is crucial. The cinematographer captures it majestically in a way that it becomes almost a character in the film. He does as much justice to the faces of the actual characters, creating indelible impressions that will stay with you for a long time to come.

Editing Award

The prize was awarded to Tali Weissman - "Six Floors to Hell"

Sponsored by:
Makor Fund - 10,000 NIS
Merav Productions-  Editing services.

Jury Comments:
This film shines a light in the darkest corners of contemporary Israel. The editor took on the difficult task of weaving together a story from observational footage. Even for those of us who thought we had seen similar subject matter covered before, this film brought a fresh emotional power.

International Competition

Best International Film

"Ironeaters" by Shaheen Dill-Riaz, Bangladesh/Germany

Sponsored by The Israeli Film Council

Jury Comments:
"Ironeaters" presents a society in which the class system still dominates and the rich exploit the poor. Powerful cinematography with a real sense for characters, this film allows us to look, feel and think without loosing the filmmaker's point of view. "Ironeaters" is a powerful film about the downside of the human condition and the eternal struggle to survive.

Special Mention

"A Father's Music" by Igor Heitzmann, Germany

Jury Comments:
"A Father's Music" is a film about emotions but without sentimentality, a film of subtext. A hymn to a nearly lost father who took the freedom to live his life like a Mozart symphony.

Students Competition

Jury Comments:
We found no perfect work, but we didn’t expect to find such work from students either. All of the winners have characteristics to be celebrated.
