Doco Kid, No Kidding Around

Children in documentaries between manipulation and documentation.
Moderator: Einat Fishbein

Children have always been part of the big and the small screen, usually stealing the show from the grown ups. Nowadays it seems children are more present than ever, particularly in the non fiction genres- documentaries, even prime-time reality television shows - traditionally the exclusive domain of adults. Documentary films are dealing with children both as the main subjects of films and in their roles supporting the adults around them. This phenomenon raises plenty of ethical questions: Where do you draw the line between documentation and exploitation? When filming children, what is an acceptable approach for the filmmaker – what manipulations – if any - may he/she employ? Should we even be allowed to be voyeurs of this world? It can be argued that filming children helps to raise important social issues, but at what cost to them?

A panel of specialists will discuss these questions.
