Tribute to Nicolas Philibert - La Moindre Des Choses
France, 1996, 105 min, French, English and Hebrew subtitles
Philibert''s focus of observation this time is at the rehearsals for the annual summer performance at La Borde, a psychiatric clinic located in a beautiful castle in the Loire Valley. Philibert stayed there for a few weeks, and found patients who were able to learn complex texts, and even interpret them on stage. He also accompanied them during routine conversations, trips in the park, and during tasks they were assigned to help maintain the place; all this in an environment of mutual respect.
This acquaintance with the inmates redefines our perceptions of the vague concepts of who is normal and sane and who isn’t. Philibert said about his work: "This is a film that talks to us about what connects us to each other as people. About our ability, and inability, to give each other space; and actually about what others, with all their differences and strangeness, can tell us about ourselves".
