Spotlight on South Korea - 16 Takes on Korean Society
South Korea, 2006, 110 Min, Korean, Hebrew & English Subtitles

"To study is to dream, to teach is to believe", the girls sing whole heartedly whilst demonstrating against the corruption in private schools in South Korea. 16 young South Korean directors bring together pieces of their work; all of them clearly and passionately social themes, with a strong desire for social improvement in a society entrenched in social struggles against a neo-liberal economy and globalization.
What kind of world do we want to live in? They ask themselves and then give the clearest answers. They document, amongst others, demonstrations by farmers who have been ejected from their homes due to the relocation and expansion of military bases at their expense, and the police, heavy handedly taking action against them; fighting for the removal of Dr. Hwang, working in the cloning field who was accused of international deception when he published false research about human stem cells. They are fighting alongside fishermen, who have no access to the sea due to a large, stone and sand battery that was built as a development project in the area; and even standing up for the civil rights of conscientious objectors of mandatory military service, being rejected as unpatriotic.
