Wings of Defeat
USA/Japan, 2007, 89 Min, English and Japanese, Hebrew Subtitles

Filmmaker Risa Morimoto is of Japanese descent, but was born and raised in New York. When she discovered that her uncle belonged to the group of voluntary kamikaze pilots in World War II she decided to secretly find out why.
She visits four survivors, octogenarians who escaped their fate and survived the war. They are willing to talk about their own experiences and the thousands of others who were loaded onto very old planes, often faulty and with only just enough fuel for the one way trip – suicidal missions destroying enemy targets as kamikaze pilots.
Through these incredible stories, illustrated with amazing archive newsreels and fragments from Japanese propaganda films, we discover how the myth of the kamikaze hero, willing to die for his emperor, came about, and how in fact they were often forced, against their will, into impossible situations, tormented by fear and insecurity.
This is an amazing opportunity to look at the war from the other side of the fence.
