Manda Bala
USA, 2006, 85 Min, Portuguese and English, English and Hebrew Subtitles
The enormous sums of money, from an agricultural project, that were intended to put a very poor area of Brazil on its feet, fall into the hands of a corrupt politician who, by way of the media, (that he acquired), causes the locals to vote for him as if he were their savior.
The abject poverty leads to the creation of gangs that kidnap the rich for ransom, and to make sure there is no doubt as to their intentions, the kidnappers cut off the victims ears and send them to the terrified families. A local plastic surgeon becomes famous, specializing in prosthetic ears for those who paid the price and escaped death.
This bizarre and shocking sequence of events is the foundation of a film by Jason Kohn. Influenced by his mentor Errol Morris, Kohn knows how to handle all the film''s elements with chilling precision and gives us, as he sees it, the new face of Brazil.
