PICKLES
Israel, 2005, 60Min., Video, Hebrew and Arabic, English Subtitles

This is the story of eight devout Israeli Arab widows, all unskilled
at labor, who decided one day to change their fate and to jointly
open a startup - a plant for high quality pickles. As widows with no
income, they are condemned to stay at home alone and raise their
children on a meager social security allowance. If they remarry, they will usually have to give up their children. To break out of their
predicament, they decide to join forces and open a pickle plant,
despite never having jobs before. Fatma, mother of 8, is the only
one with a driving license, and she becomes the distributor. Samira,
the only one who speaks Hebrew, becomes the CEO, and while
holding this position has to deal with a major crisis - a daughter
who is not allowed to meet her. The film tracks the progress and development of this unconventional startup as these women work to improve their lives. They find friendship and support in each other, while their personal lives reflect the joys and sorrows of family weddings, bereavement, and loneliness. They face numerous hurdles as the business struggles to expand to stores throughout Israel.
