RAVEL’S BRAIN
Canada/France, 2001, 52 Min., Video, English and French, English & Hebrew Subtitles

This is the story of Maurice Ravel, the French composer of the famous “Bolero” who suffered during his last years from a disease that damaged his brain and his ability to create and compose music. The meticulous and productive composer, always surrounded by admirers, became as a result of a car accident a victim of failed eyesight, unable to concentrate and with difficulties of expressing himself. His friends tried to help by taking him on trips to exotic and stimulating places but to no avail. Through the story of Ravel’s illness, Weinstein touches on the subject of the dawn of neurosurgery in Europe. The mystery of composing is combined with an effort to unravel the secrets of the most complex and intriguing human organ, the brain. The attempt to save the degeneration of Ravels brain and liberate from it the imprisoned notes is described here as an additional stage of the human spirits attempt to control natures secrets.
