DERRIDA
USA, 2005, 85 Min., Video, English and French, English & Hebrew Subtitles

Kirby Dick and Amy Ziring-Kofman photographed the French philosopher Jacques Derrida for seven years creating an intimate and surprisingly candid portrait of the life and ideas of one of the greatest and most controversial 20 th Century philosophers. Jacquie, as he is known to his family, doesn''t talk only about concepts of deconstructivism or absolute forgiveness to New York, Paris and Cape Town students, but also sits at his barbers shop and gets a haircut, prepares his lunch and blushes on a sofa  longside his wife. When asked what he would like another philosopher to say about his life, he answers that he would like him to say something about his sex life, the truly intimate parts, which are not written in books and essays. The film, operates on three levels - interwoven in each other - raising both trivial and significant
questions from Derridas writings, connecting them to his personal life and to the actual making of the film and the attempt to summarize a man’s life. Director Kirby Dick said, after Derridas death in October 2004: “When I make a film about someone, the moment I enter the editing room he ceases being an actual person. However, when
someone actually dies, since I knew him and he exists in my film, my feeling is that he lives on”.
