THE MAGICIANS
Spain, 2005, 95 Min, 35mm, Catalan, English & Hebrew Subtitles

In 1937, at the peak of the Spanish Civil War the amateur
Catalonian film director Philip Sagas made a film with the
participation of children from an orphanage. The film "The Life of a Fakir" was an adventure type film in the spirit of Aladdin or Sinbad, a copy of which has survived to date. Elisabet Cabeza, who''s deceased father was one of the orphans, assembled six of the children, now 80 years old, who took part in the film to reminisce. The film opens with a reconstruction of the experience of being filmed, when the children changed from their school uniform into exotic costumes, and continues with the painful memories of the war that penetrated the closed world of the orphanage. The simple structure of the film produces endless magical moments in which the participants re-experience their childhood.
