FAVELA RISING
USA/Brazil, 2005, 80 Min, Video, Portuguese, English & Hebrew Subtitles

Anderson Sa was a drug dealer in one of Rios’ most notorious favelas (slums) until he decided in the early 90’s to channel his leadership and charisma to a constructive cause and was one of the fathers of the socio-musical Afro-Reggae movement. Ever since Sa and his friends started recruiting youth and children to the movement, drums replaced guns, the number of drug dealers in the favela dropped from 150 to 25 and concerts for the masses replaced the mass murders of gang members and Rio policemen. Directors Mochary and Zimbalist econstruct Anderson and his friends ¸tough battle and succeed in demonstrating the social changes of the favela in an optimistic film without preaching or being didactic. The electrifying music penetrates the sound track only after the tales of drugs and murders are told, creating a visual and sensual experience correlating with the periodic historic reconstruction.
