BEFORE FLYING BACK TO EARTH
Germany/Lithuania, 2005, 52 Min, Video, Lithuanian and, English & Hebrew Subtitles
Following the recovery of his young daughter from ukemia,
Arunas Matelis returns to the Childrens Cancer Ward at the
Vilnius hospital to make a documentary of the daily lives of the hospitalized children. Matelis follows the sick children and their parents without resorting to sentimental or emotional manipulations. Even at the most crucial stages of the illness the children present an extraordinary capability to adapt to their situation and try to carry on as usual - they practice Karate, fantasize about burgers and coke, while eating the tepid hospital cabbage soup, or simply worry as to the color of their hair when it will grow back. Matelis inserts in various scenes black and white stills of the children, insinuating the ever present angle of death, hovering over the ward, and also as a means to accentuate the vitality of the children.
