THEM AND ME (EUX ET MOI)
France, 2001, 63 Min., Video, French, English Subtitles

Over several years anthologist and filmmaker Stephane Breton returns again and again to a small New Guinea village which he wishes to make his second home. He speaks the dialect of the natives, who walk about naked with bows and arrows earning their livelihood from the surrounding forest - but no matter how hard he tries, he cannot become one of them. He is offended when they take more interest in his tooth brush than in him, and feels betrayed that they see him only as a source of income trying repeatedly to sell different products to him. They call his camera - bow, as they see it as his weapon. Regardless of his embarrassment he is compelled to  cknowledge that the economic relationship that they are trying to establish with him is a vital bond between such opposite worlds. After giving up the fantasy of a purer, more innocent world, and accepting the other sides needs and motives which basically are similar to those of the only too familiar Western world, and after realising that the view point is not unilateral but that they also view him in an anthropological manner - finally a cautious friendship begins to form.
