BROTHER YUSEF
Swiss/Germany/France, 2005, 52 Min., Video, English, No Subtitles

Only few of the Jazz founders and great musicians, are still
alive. One of them is the composer, sax player and poet Yusef
Latif, who''s had an acclaimed career of over six decades. Today,
at the age of 84, he lives in small wooden home deep in the
woods of Massachusetts.
Directors Humbert and Penzel visited him at his home, creating
an intimate filmographic portrait that manages to avoid the
cliches of the genre. The film is temperate just like the notes
Latif produces when playing and pensive as the poems he
recites. Except for one archive insert from his 1962 performance,
Latif is the only person on screen, reminiscing duets with Gillespy
and others, playing different instruments, reciting poems or
simply sitting, thinking.
