BEIJING BUBBLES - ROCK AND
Germany/China, 2005, 85 Min, Video, Mandarin and English, English & Hebrew Subtitles
The film presents a portrait of five rock bands survival in the
Chinese capital, which finds it hard to digest their music. The bands are very diverse in their musical styles varying from tributes to Ramones (New Pants), Jim Morrison (Joyside) and Lou Reed (Sha Zi) influences, through a combination of rock and Mongol ethnic music (T9) to pure uncompromising Punk of the female, and one timid bass player, band (Hang On The Box). Common to all five bands is their complete anonymity resulting from the Chinese audiences preference of saccharine Pop music and their
lack of interest and capability to integrate in their urrounding society. They are not a part of the changing society, and dont represente of a young generation revolution - they only speak for themselves. From one sparingly attended performance to the next we become acquainted with the band members and their families and discover a picture of everyday Chinese life. Above all the film is bubbling with wonderful energetic and refreshing music kindling a longing for the sixties and seventies in the west before music was controlled by big Labels.
