Through the use of Cinema Verite, dramatic constructions and raws footage, Christian Frei tells the story of the Giant Buddha statues of Bamiyan, bombed on February 2001 by the Taliban. Frei raises provocative questions concerning the Talibans barbaric act such as; why had the bombing of the statues provoked such strong reproach and horror in the West from persons and organizations that for years have been indifferent to the oppression of minorities and omen in this country. The film presents the personal voyage of five people to the statues: Said Mirza Hussein, a resident of the caves surrounding the statues; Tayseer Allouni an "Al Jazeera" reporter and the only one who succeeded in documenting the destruction of the statues; r. Zemaryalai Tarzi an exile Afghan Archeologist searching for the third (reclining) Buddha in the Bamiyan region; Nelofer Pariza the Afghan-Canadian actress; and Frei’s reconstruction of Shoan Zangs (a Chinese Buddhist monk) 16 years long pilgrimage to the statues in the 7 th century. The result is a visually spectacular film, which broadens the mind and raises questions concerning the nature of the elations
