THE BOYS OF BARAKA
USA/Kenya, 2005, 84 Min., Video, English, Hebrew Subtitles

The special educational program at “Baraka” boarding school in Kenya has been operating for twenty years. Each year twenty students, age 12 to 14 from high schools in the toughest slum neighborhoods of the United States are chosen for fully subsidized studies in the boarding school. The simple and optimistic idea is to separate them from their broken homes and criminal environment and provide them with an academically fruitful environment to help them escape the life of crime and poverty. Through four charismatic boys we see how the culture shock, homesickness, the lizards in the rooms, elephants and  iraffes in the horizon and the strict discipline - soon transform into a social bonding and academic achievements. However, that’s when global politics (terrorist attacks in Mombassa and the Iraq war) catch up them, disrapting their return for the second year. Do they still stand a chance?
